Reading Academic Arabic
At B1–B2 level, you should be able to read newspaper articles, short literary texts, and formal correspondence. Developing reading comprehension strategies accelerates progress significantly.
Top-Down Reading Strategy
- Scan the headline and first paragraph to predict content
- Identify the topic sentence in each paragraph
- Use context to infer unfamiliar words – don't stop to look up every word
Common Text Connectors
- وَ / ثُمَّ / بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ – and / then / after that
- لَكِنْ / غَيْرَ أَنَّ / إِلَّا أَنَّ – but / however
- لِأَنَّ / بِسَبَبِ – because / due to
- عَلَى الرَّغْمِ مِنْ – despite / although
Practice Exercise
Read one paragraph from Al-Ahram or BBC Arabic daily. Summarise it in two sentences in Arabic. This habit builds vocabulary, grammar and reading speed simultaneously.
