💡 German Numbers - Essential Tips

✅ Good News for Arabic Speakers!

German compound numbers (21-99) say the UNITS before the TENS, joined by "und" (and) — exactly like Arabic! "einundzwanzig" (one-and-twenty) = "واحد وعشرون". English speakers find this backwards, but you already think this way.

✅ "eins" vs "ein"

Use eins when the number stands alone or when counting (eins, zwei, drei...). In compound numbers, use ein-: "einundzwanzig". Before a noun, use the appropriate form: "ein Buch", "eine Frau".

✅ Comma vs Period (Opposite of English!)

German uses a COMMA for decimals and a PERIOD for thousands — the opposite of English. "1.000,50 €" = one thousand and fifty cents in German = "1,000.50" in English.

✅ "Zwei" vs "Zwo"

On the phone or in noisy places, Germans often say "zwo" instead of "zwei" to avoid confusion with "drei" (three).

✅ Ordinal Number Rule

Numbers 1-19: add -te (vierte, siebte) with irregulars (erste, dritte, siebte). Numbers 20+: add -ste (zwanzigste, hundertste).

✅ "Hundert" and "Tausend"

Colloquially Germans often drop "ein": "hundert Euro" instead of "einhundert Euro". Both are correct, but formal writing prefers "einhundert/eintausend".

✅ Years Are Read in Pairs

Years before 2000 are read as two two-digit numbers: 1985 = "neunzehnhundertfünfundachtzig" (nineteen-hundred-eighty-five). Years 2000+ are read normally: 2026 = "zweitausendsechsundzwanzig".
