💡 German Time & Calendar - Essential Tips
✅ "halb vier" = 3:30, NOT 4:30!
Germans name the NEXT hour for "half past." "halb vier" literally means "half FOUR" but refers to 3:30 — halfway TO four o'clock, not half past three.
✅ The am / im / um Rule
am + days (am Montag), im + months & seasons (im Mai, im Winter), um + clock times (um drei Uhr). Mixing these up is a very common learner mistake.
✅ Always Capitalized
Days, months, and seasons are nouns in German and are ALWAYS capitalized — even in the middle of a sentence: "Ich komme am Montag" (not "montag").
✅ All Masculine (der)
Every day of the week, every month, and every season name is masculine: der Montag, der Januar, der Sommer. One less gender to memorize for this topic!
✅ Samstag vs. Sonnabend
Both mean "Saturday." Samstag is used in most of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Sonnabend is more common in parts of eastern/northern Germany (e.g. Berlin).
✅ 24-Hour vs. 12-Hour Clock
Official schedules (trains, TV, appointments) use the 24-hour format: "20:15 Uhr." Everyday speech often uses the 12-hour format with morgens/nachmittags/abends added for clarity when needed.
✅ Quarter Past vs. Quarter To
"Viertel nach drei" (quarter past three = 3:15) uses the CURRENT hour. "Viertel vor vier" (quarter to four = 3:45) uses the UPCOMING hour. Only "halb" breaks this pattern by always using the upcoming hour.
