Grade 2: Skip Counting
Skip counting means counting forward in equal jumps instead of one at a time — by 2s, 5s, or 10s. It is faster than counting by ones and it builds the foundation for multiplication. Use the number line below to hop and watch the pattern grow.
What Is Skip Counting?
Instead of saying 1, 2, 3, 4… we jump in equal steps. Counting by 2s sounds like 2, 4, 6, 8. Counting by 5s sounds like 5, 10, 15, 20. Counting by 10s sounds like 10, 20, 30, 40. Each jump adds the same amount.
Pick a step, then press Hop to jump along the number line.
Spot the Pattern
Each kind of skip counting makes its own pattern in the ones digit:
- Place Value
- Comparing & Ordering Numbers
- Skip Counting (this lesson)
- Addition with Regrouping
- Subtraction with Borrowing
- Even & Odd Numbers
