Grade 2: Skip Counting

Skip counting means counting forward in equal jumps instead of one at a time — by 2s, 5s, or 10s. It is faster than counting by ones and it builds the foundation for multiplication. Use the number line below to hop and watch the pattern grow.

What Is Skip Counting?

Instead of saying 1, 2, 3, 4… we jump in equal steps. Counting by 2s sounds like 2, 4, 6, 8. Counting by 5s sounds like 5, 10, 15, 20. Counting by 10s sounds like 10, 20, 30, 40. Each jump adds the same amount.

Pick a step, then press Hop to jump along the number line.

Spot the Pattern

Each kind of skip counting makes its own pattern in the ones digit:

By 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 — these are the even numbers.  |  By 5: 5, 10, 15, 20 — always ends in 5 or 0.  |  By 10: 10, 20, 30 — always ends in 0.
💡 Why it matters: skip counting helps you count money (5s and 10s), tell time (5s on a clock), and it is the first step toward learning the multiplication tables.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is skip counting?

Skip counting is counting forward in equal jumps instead of by ones — for example by 2s (2, 4, 6), by 5s (5, 10, 15), or by 10s (10, 20, 30).

Why do children learn skip counting?

It makes counting faster, helps with counting money and telling time, and builds the foundation for learning multiplication.

What pattern does counting by 5 make?

Counting by 5 always lands on numbers that end in 5 or 0: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and so on.
