What is Rounding?
Rounding means changing a number to a simpler number that is close to it. The rounded number is not exact, but it is easier to use.
Purpose of Rounding
We round numbers to make large numbers easier to calculate, read, understand, and remember.
The 3-Step of Rounding to the Nearest 100
- Find the target place: Identify the hundreds digit in your number.
- Check the neighbor: Look immediately to the right at the tens digit.
- Apply the rule:
- If the tens digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4: Round down. Keep the hundreds digit the same and change the tens and ones digits to zero.
- If the tens digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9: Round up. Increase the hundreds digit by one and change the tens and ones digits to zero.

Look at the tens digit: 4.
Because 4 is less than 5, keep the hundreds digit 2 the same and change the tens and ones digits to 0.
