Grade 2: Addition with Regrouping
When we add and the ones column makes 10 or more, we cannot fit two digits in one place. So we regroup: we carry one ten over to the tens column. Step through the example below to see exactly how carrying works.
What Does Regrouping Mean?
Ten ones make one ten. If the ones add up to 10 or more, we keep the ones digit in the ones place and carry the 1 (one ten) to the top of the tens column. Then we add the tens, including the carried ten.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is regrouping in addition?
Regrouping (carrying) happens when a column adds to 10 or more. You keep the ones digit and carry one ten to the next column on the left.
When do I need to carry?
Only when the ones add up to 10 or more. If the ones add to 9 or less, there is nothing to carry.
Where does the carried 1 go?
The carried 1 is one extra ten, so it goes to the top of the tens column and is added with the tens.
